Interspecif Clivia from well known South African breeder

Hi all,

this one is bred by the late Fred van Niekerk from South Africa who gave me a few seedlings in 2006.
He is well known in the Clivia world because of his Maxima plants. He claimed that they were a separate species in Clivia, but nowadays most people place them within the Clivia robusta group.
It is a real beauty with potential for breeding, having the group 2 yellow mutation from Natal Yellow in the background. In Clivia there are different yellow mutations that are not compatible with each other. They are named group 1 ,2 etc. When intercrossed they give orange flowers.
I Crossed it with White Robusta F1 to see if it is compatible, because crosses of white robusta with group 1 yellows gave only orange colours.

Hallo Aart,

Hallo Tetje,

Fred found this material at a specific place long time ago before Clivia robusta was named. There was the Swamp gardenii (is now also Clivia robusta) and he found that it was not the same, but a species is almost never clear cut. There are some differences between the Clivia robusta I have with the Maxima plants, but I would say they are very close. The pictures of white robusta show their potency for breeding white clivia. It is true however when they age they get more cream. Crossed with other clivia (group 2 ) it also gives more cream material, so it needs further breeding.
